Going forward here are a few things that I would like to inform you all of:
- Competition dance videos will be standardized – all videos will be taken backing the camera, in the same format & size.
- Tempos will match the current UCWDC tempos for all dances
- Dances will match the UCWDC curriculum to include core patters, spatial structure etc.
- When new motions are introduced, they will be at all levels from newcomer to ascension divisions
- Step sheets will state if the dance is country or non-country to match the current rules
- Step sheets will also designate style, for example Stage – Charleston or Street – Lyrical
- Where possible, all dances for the next season will be released and previewed at Worlds
- Classic & Showcase dances to be used at events will be listed on the individual event website, due to usage dates. There is a two week window within the usage date and the event can choose which dances are used. Please contact the event if you do not see the dances listed. You may NOT ask to dance the old dance if the event is using the new dance.
- IF there is a discrepancy between the step sheet & video – please go by the VIDEO as it is from the original choreographer. This will go into effect for the 2020 dance season (2019)
- I have noticed a trend of people asking DJ’s to allow them to dance less than the full song. Please note that any request like this MUST be taken to the contest coordinator, not the DJ. If you are dancing showcase – you are NOT allowed to dance less than the full song. If you are dancing uncontested classic in multiple age divisions, the contest coordinator may allow you to dance for 1 minute per division, provided that it is not an ABC or if it means you would miss tags or restarts.
- For new dancers, please pay particular attention to Tags (a piece of choreography in the phrasing of the music that may appear once or multiple times) and Restarts (where due to the phrasing of the music the dance may start over at some point in the choreography) Missing these is a common mistake that new dancers make!
- Primary newcomer dancers (0-9 years old) will now have their own dances to make it easier for them to enter our sport!

I have been part of the UCWDC since 2004 and am an event director of the Tulip Challenge & Italian Country Western Dance Challenge. I initially came from the Ballroom & Latin world and also performed on the stage with experience in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, musical theatre etc. I have been an active participant in line dance as a competitor, judge, instructor and coach. I am a line dance World Champion in Classic Advanced, Open Showcase, Male Superstar, Team and Choreography. With my partner, we were the first European Masters couple, I was the first male to make it to both Masters & Superstars and we are the only couple to win both Masters & Superstars; and at the same World Championships!
I have coached line dancers who have won World Championships at all levels and regularly choreograph dances that are used in competition. I have judged at every level and have taught line dancers of every level all around the world. I am also a many times couples world champion including Div 1 Classic Open World Champion, Showcase Open World Champion & Classic Masters World Champion. I am a dual certified Master level judge, educator, examiner and contest coordinator.
I spent many years in the USA promoting line dance which has brought many new dancers into the line dance community. I love line dance and will continue to do all I can to continue to advance the sport of line dance now that I am back in the UK, where I have always promoted couples dancing to line dancers. The line dance committee and I work hard to bring you the best choreographers, best music and best line dances for you to enjoy. We are always open to feedback!
I am very honored to serve you all in the position of UCWDC Line Dance Chairman. If there are any questions or issues please feel free to contact me using my official email address linedance@ucwdc.org.
Kind Regards,
UNITED COUNTRY WESTERN DANCE COUNCIL
